Save The Energy

I have already been here in America for 3 months. Most of the time, my life is full of curiosity. What has surprised me most is the big difference between the temperature indoors and outdoors.
It is absolutely ridiculous that I have to wear jacket sometimes in the classroom because of the air-conditioning, while it is pretty hot outside. This is definitely a waste of energy and resource, although FGCU uses a lot of solar energy. It is true that everyday at least millions of tons of natural resources are put into use for producing electricity all over the US. I do believe that the classroom and the library don't need to be too cold for us to focus on study.
I have also noticed that American people prefer use elevators instead of walking upstairs, which is also some kind of waste. Waling is a healthier and available way to go upstairs. Disabled people are the only exception for using elevator on our campus. Anyway the highest building in FGCU is of only four storey.
I hope everyone can read some works about the crisis resources and advocate more energy-saving lifestyles. It can be more worth, if the saved money is used on campus construction and offering financial aid to poor students. All in all, I hope my blog can invoke readers’ attention to the serious environment and resourse problem and do something to save energy.

My carbon footprint

In my opinion, carbon footprint means the CO2 that people produce because of their consuming of natural resourses. According to this calculation, my estimated greenhouse gas emissions are 13 tons of CO2 per year,  which is under the US national average but over world average. I guess this is mainly because I do not drive, in which way I consume less gas and produce less greenhouse than other people who live in America.
However, I have to admit that I do increase my carbon footprint after my arrival in America. I also worked out how much I would produce if I lived in the lifestyle that I have in China and save that long flight from Beijing to Fort Myers. It is 8 tons, still over the world average. First  I was totally confused, because I did everything to save energy and recycle as much as possible in China, what is more, I only used air-conditioning in hot summer. Then I realize that I chose Florida as the place I live. What if there is an option called China? In another word, my over-average is because of the high American average.
After this calculation, I tried to figure out how can I decrease my use of energy. The central air-conditioning in my dorm has never been shut down, even if there is no one in the house. I can discuss this with my roommates and turn it off before our leaving. The lights are decided by the housing office of FGCU, which is not up to me, but I can turn off the lights in the livingroom and kitchen when they are in use. I can also unplug my laptop when I leave and take short shower everyday. Organic food may be selected when I am shopping, and it will definitely benefit both my health and our earth. Recycling was my habit in China, but I became lazy and didn't continue after my arrival here. I will recycle again from now on. If I follow those changes that I have thought about, my consuming will be declined to 9.1 tons of CO2. Actually enven if we did a little easy change, we could make our earth healthier.

Post-tutorial

From this tutorial, I get more and detailed knowledge of how to use the resource in the library. I had a deeper understanding of what I have already known and absorbed something I had never think of, such as how to use database to make research effecient and accurate.
I have already known the importance of telling whether a book is scholarly or not. My major is accounting, and the principle of accounting changes almost every year in China. The method used for recording operation or calculating the cost which I have learnt last year probably may not be applied to this year. As a result, I have to update my knowledge, especially when I am in internship.Every time I searched information, I looked for the latest resources. So I only search the one of the most autority, which is revised by the Ministry of Finance.
Before that class, I also have already known the importance of quotation and how to quote. And that is used widely and frequently when we are writing essay. But I did not know how terrible the consequences of plagiarism before. This class gave me an alert.
I also learnt how to use reference from the area which is easist to be ignored. Besides, before this I have never taken purpose and audience into consideration.

A Visit to Naples Beach

A few days ago, my friend invited me and Jo to Naples Beach, which was really an  amazing experience for me. Although my former university is near a good beach, this beach was more beautiful than I could ever imagine.
From the moment I stepped on the beach, I was enchanted by the oncoming scenery. The white soft sands stroked me while the sea birds were flying by. I could hear the wave patting the sands and fading away the footprints that we had left. The salty breeze kissed my cheek, whispering. Sometimes birds stopped, landing right by the water and walking along the trace made by the tide. Maybe they were looking for food or just showing their beautiful feathers.
Then we went to the pier, where we could see through the water and have a look at the cheerful fish and the dancing jellyfish. I could not help jumping, only to hear the old wood floor that told the history of the pier. There were also some unique wooden houses on the pier, on whose roof birds were refining their nest, perhaps looking for the hatching of their baby birds.
The clouds were larger than those in China. I really envied their everyday, cozy fluttering around, with no need to worry about exams. They kept changing their posture every minute, showing us elegant silhouettes quietly. It was really the most wonderful beach I have ever seen.

The difference between writing to a friend and an editor

Definitely, writing a letter to a friend who has known me for years is far more easy to handle for me. Hardly do I need to consider about the tone, the grammar, the spelling, and even the thesis, because he understands me so much that he can pick out my mood simply from my handwriting. However, while writing to the editor, I have to take notice to everything, including the thesis, the frame, the wording, and the punctuation mark.

Writing to the editor is more time consuming and less casual. I have to focus on something in my essay. Actually, even in China I did not feel like writing a letter, because seldom do I express myself vividly and thoroughly. In the letter to my friend, I was always just talking about how much I miss the days we spent together and about everything interesting that happened to me those days. I did not have emphasis at all. However, in the letter to the editor, I tried to describe the situation first, then put forward my idea with analysis and think twice before every sentence is completed.

Talking about the difference between writing in Chinese and English, without a doubt, I am more familiar with my native tongue. I can quote hundreds of classic idioms and poetry to express myself implicitly or exactly. But when writing in English, I have to rely on the dictionary, even with which I still cannot use various vocabulary and sentence patterns.

All in all, there is still a long way for me to go before I can use fluent English to compose the essay to different audiences.

This is Sophie

Hello everyone! My name is Xin Luo and you can also call me Sophie. I am an enthusiastic Chinese girl who is always full of energy. It is a great honor for me to be selected as an exchange student this year. FGCU is an active university attracting students from all over the world.Although this is only my second week in FGCU, I have totally fell in love with it. As a non native English speaker, I have been facing tons of difficulties which has made me despressed since the first day in America. However, whenever I was in trouble, there was always someone there doing me a favor, which made me moved and grateful.

As the only child in my family, I am always suffering from loneliness. I used to believe that I would still be lonely in America. However, on the first day of international orientation, I have made some friends and some of whom are also taking Compesition I. I am excited to be here communicating with people from a different culture and being a member of language club. What means most to me is telling people about the real China.

I am an adventurous girl, who never gives in to difficult situations.

In the past 20 years I have always been a hard-working girl, who has devoted my spare time to study. I do love researching and I try my best to be learned. If I was interested in some subject, I would definitely do my best at it in my class. In another word, I am a studyholic. However, this year I want something different, because I am tired of struggling for first place. Having a dinner with friends without talking about figures in macroeconomics, accounts, and solving equations must be great fun. Listening to music and watching movies at weekends maybe better choice than studying charts. I really want a new lifestyle in which I will not urge myself to be perfect all the time.

I am here to begin my new life and new adventure and I am sure I could be a good listener and an excellent communicator.
